FI and a Purpose-Driven Life: A Series

Today I read a thought provoking article, “13 questions that will change your life” which recommended thirteen different questions that you should be asking yourself if your life has gone off-track in some way. Earlier this year, as I started to question my current path and started on my FI journey, I started to evaluate my life and choices like I’ve never done before.

“The unexamined life isn’t worth living.”

– Socrates

I was fortunate to know what I wanted to do with my life as soon as I discovered computers. My dad brought home a laptop from work that I loved to fiddle with whenever he would let me. It was the challenge of the unknown and a lust for creating something, that drew me into the world of technology.

For the past 25 years, I’ve been working in the tech industry making a good career for myself. But… then I began to question where I wanted my life to go for the next 50 years or so.

I want to make a difference. I want to challenge the status quo. I want to give someone a chance like the one I’ve been given. I want to travel. I want to see how others live and to become more accepting of differences. I want to see if I can find another passion in life and, if I do, I want to overcome the fear of pursuing it. I want to make others understand that passion can lead to so many amazing things.

Questions, Questions, Questions…

In the article, Travis Bradberry, proposed the following 13 questions as the questions to ask yourself if you life isn’t quite headed in the right direction.

  1. How do People see me differently than I see myself?
  2. What/who did I make better today?
  3. Am I being true to my values?
  4. If I achieved all my goals, how would I feel? What do I do to feel that way as I work to achieve them?
  5. What haven’t I taken the time to learn about?
  6. In what areas of my life am I settling?
  7. What do I want my life to look like in 5 years?
  8. What would I do if I wasn’t scared?
  9. Who has qualities that I aspire to develop?
  10. What problem are we solving?
  11. What’s stopping me from doing the things that I should be doing?
  12. Will you be my mentor?
  13. What’s the most important thing I’ve learned in life so far? Am I living that lesson?

This will be the start of a blog series where I will evaluate each of these questions and really examine my life in regards to his proposed questions. I challenge you to also examine your life as the series progresses.
